About us
Story of Liisbeth – the initiator of the book:When I started to work as a messenger, there were mostly cis- males working in this job in Leipzig, Germany. The community was very welcoming and helpful, but the job had challenges and still no one really could understand the struggle I was going through. I didn’t have people to talk to who shared my experiences that I, as a woman, did. I wrote about and drew down each situation that made me feel uncomfortable. After all the years, my notebooks were filled with different experiences, so I knew this is something that needed to be made public. Not just my story – but the stories of many, many under-represented messengers, struggling with same things.Meeting Giulia – the illustrator for this book who’s brought to life these tales in punky drawings – was the push I needed to start this book and get the stories out there. After all, it’s not just a problem that the messenger community is struggling with, but it is a much bigger problem in our society.
Story of Giulia – the illustrator of the book:
I have to say, before I started this project I was quite distant from the world of bike messengers. It's a culture that wasn’t very present to me in my home country of Italy and I was confronted with only when I came to live in Germany.
When I met Liisbeth, I was in a specific period of my life where I was trying to confronting myself about the topic of abuse and harassment, but I was alone with it and I didn’t have people to talk to about it. Talking to Liisbeth about her project gave me the impetus to do something about this issue. Even though I wasn't a bike messenger, I remembered how many times in my life I was denied jobs I was interested in just because I was a woman. So I connected with the suffering that Liisbeth was trying to highlight, and I wanted to get involved with the project, 100%. From there, I felt less alone, and more courageous speaking out on this issue, and I hope that this book can be a tool for personal reflection and on the society, we live in, in an effort to give to the wave of change we are now (starting to) ride.
